Poul Henningsen designed his first lights back in 1925-1926 for an exhibition in Paris. His work with Louis Poulsen continued right up until his death in 1967. Throughout his life, PH sought to create glare-free light, direct light where it was most needed, and create soft shadows, using incandescent bulbs as a light source. Poul Henningsen designed Snowball in 1958, and it was exhibited together with PH 5 at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art. However, Snowball received no particular attention on this occasion, and was only re-launched and manufactured from 1983.

The pendant emits a non-glaring downward directed light, while also illuminating its own frame thus creating a soft, comfortable radiance from within the centre of the pendant.

Poul Henningsen designed the PH 5 in 1958 as a counter-reaction to the bulb manufacturer’s many alterations to the shape and size of incandescent bulbs at the time, which Henningsen found to be completely senseless.

The PH 5 fitted all types of light sources by turning everything into amiable lighting. This made the PH 5 so famous it became synonymous with ‘the PH light’ that still lifts even the most contemporary of interiors today, as does the PH 5 Mini. The smaller version of the PH 5 was introduced in 2017, and created in accordance with Poul Henningsen’s original design with a top shade of approximately 30 cm in diameter.

Danish writer, designer, and architect Poul Henningsen (1894-1967) had a vision – to capture the golden hour. In 1958, he created the PH 5 in response to incandescent bulbs and the constant changes in their shape and size and the consequent risk of glare – something PH wanted to avoid. The result was a striking and versatile lamp that could accommodate any bulb. This soon became the PH lamp in Denmark, used in public buildings and private homes.

Known as the PH lamp, the iconic PH 5 design is based on Henningsen’s renowned three-shade system. The pyramid-like fixture effuses both descending and lateral light to illuminate itself. This ensures the light is soft, rich, and completely glare-free.

This lamp design is one of the few ever created by Finn Juhl (1912-1989), one of Denmark’s most renowned architects. Initially designed in 1963, the pendant and table lamp were reintroduced as FJ Elements in 2025, including the original two-toned grey variant.

The lamp’s name comes from Finn Juhl’s hand sketches, in which he described it as being composed of „elements“. These early drawings document the lamp’s form, proportions and the concept for an entire lamp series, and also tell of its overall construction. While the materials and geometric lines of the FJ Elements’ design stand out in their simplicity, the playful creativity is evident in how the upper shade can rotate around on the lower shade. This function allows you to control the direction of the light in multiple ways, while also transforming the lamp’s appearance.
